One of our award winning directors recently directed a video commercial for local TV. The budget was tight and they decided to shoot the commercial in South Africa using video production Cape Town. Cape Town has become immensely popular as a location for filming TV Series, feature films, TV commercials and music videos. In recent years big budget production chosen Cape Town as their location for filming. These include:
- Safe House
- Mad Max – Fury Road
- Black Sails
- The Jungle Book
- Blood Diamond
- District 9
- 10 000 BC
- Hotel Rwanda
These are some very well known productions, but the list is long and that’s only TV series and feature films, the number of TV commercials and other productions is astounding and has resulted in explosive growth in the local Cape Town film and video production industry. I suspect the tremendous growth in popularity is a result of the rising costs of filming locally in the United States, the favorable currency exchange rate between the two countries, the availability of highly skilled crew and the incredible variety of shooting locations.
Our local Austin director/producer, Peter Fordsworth hired the services of Cape Town Video Productions to assist him with managing his video production in Cape Town. As a first time visitor to Cape Town, Peter was anxious about the production of the commercial for his client running smoothly. According to Peter, this Cape Town based video production company exceeded his expectations, outperforming some of the most professional film and video production companies that he has worked with at home in the United States. Peter feels that this outfit is undoubtedly one of the best video production companies in South Africa.
“I arrived at Cape Town International airport exhausted and very cranky after more than 20 hours of travel. I was extremely anxious about working in a country I had no experience in, and what to expect from the local production company I had employed to facilitate the production. After being collected at the airport by one of the Cape Town Video Productions (CTVP) partners and driven to my plush accommodation are started to relax. Chatting to Carl from Cape Town Video Productions, as we drove to my hotel, I realized that I could start relaxing. There wasn’t a question or concern that I had that they didn’t have covered, in fact Carl mentioned a few logistical concerns that had been resolved that I hadn’t even considered. We began shooting the commercial 2 days later. By this time, I had spent enough time with the CTVP team to completely let go and focus on my role of directing the commercial. The next three days of shooting on location and in studio were long and exhausting but things ran like clockwork. The crew were so professional I was astounded. I don’t think I have ever worked with such a skilled and resourceful production company.” – Peter Fordsworth
I met with Peter last week and his genuine enthusiasm and respect for the CTVP team he had worked with was contagious. Peter asked me to please write this article to assist any of our other members who may find themselves in a similar situation of having to find a reliable video production company in Cape Town. The CTVP guys have an impressive website with plenty of testimonials as well as a fantastic showreel.
